South Africa v Australia: coverage of second T20 International in Johannesburg

A WORLD record partnership between David Warner and Glenn Maxwell helped Australia end a five-match losing streak with a thrilling last-ball win over South Africa in their Twenty20 clash in Johannesburg.

Mitchell Marsh hit the winning runs - off the first ball he faced, and the last of Australia’s 20 overs - as the tourists chased down the monster target of 205 with five wickets remaining.

It was Australia’s first successful run chase of a score in excess of 200.

Marsh and fellow all-rounder James Faulkner finished things off but it was Warner (77 off 40 balls), batting in the unfamiliar position of No.4, and Maxwell (75 off 43 balls) that the tourists had most to thank after they combined for a 161-run partnership.

It was a record stand for the fourth wicket in T20 Internationals and it set Australia on course for victory after new opening pair Aaron Finch (2) and Shane Watson (9), as well as captain Steve Smith (19) were dismissed inside the opening six overs.

Maxwell hit three sixes before losing his wicket in the penultimate over by all-rounder Chris Morris.

When Warner was bowled by Kagiso Rabada off the first ball of the final over, it looked like the Aussies might fall short of victory, before Faulkner (7 not out) and Marsh (2 not out) got the job done.

Earlier, the Proteas posted 7-204 from their 20 overs thanks mainly to a classy 79 off 41 balls from captain Faf du Plessis.

Star batsman AB de Villiers once again fell early - this time bowled by John Hastings - before a rapid 44 off 28 balls from wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock helped South Africa get off to a flyer.

Faulkner showed his worth with a quality spell of left-arm pace bowling that yielded 3-28, bowling de Kock and also picking up the late wickets of Farhaan Behardien and Chris Morris.

Ashton Agar, who replaced fellow spinner Adam Zampa, took a wicket on his T20 International debut, claiming the key scalp of David Miller for 33, but was expensive as he conceded 25 off two overs.
