Shreyas Iyer’s 2015-16 Ranji performance is a class apart: Statistics
During the 2015-2016 edition, Iyer also become the highest run-getter in a Ranji Trophy season for Mumbai, beating the previous record of Wasim Jaffer, who scored 1260 runs in 2008-2009.
Here are the top highest run-getters in a Ranji season:
Players Runs Team Season
VVS Laxman 1415 Hyderabad 19999-2000
Shreyas Iyer 1321 Mumbai 2015-2016
Vijay Bharadwaj 1280 Karnataka 1998-1999
Wasim Jaffer 1260 Mumbai 2008-2009
Kedar Jadhav 1223 Maharashtra 2013-2014
Ajinkya Rahane 1089 Mumbai 2008-2009
But there’s more to the story than just Iyer’s second highest tally of runs in a single Ranji season. Iyer completely dominated this edition and was the standout performer above everyone else during this campaign.
Consider these statistics:
A) Iyer was the highest run-getter with 1321 runs in 11 matches in this edition. The second highest run-getter during this campaign was also a Mumbai player. AA Herwadkar scored 879 runs at an average of 48.83 from 11 matches. The difference between these top two run-getters in this Ranji campaign was a whopping 442 runs – this is the highest difference in any Ranji season. The previous highest difference was 401 runs between Rusi Modi’s 1008 runs and Vijay Merchant’s 607 runs in 1944-45.
B) Iyer’s strike rate during this Ranji campaign was an impressive 92.70 which was far higher than second best strike rate of 75.10 in 8 matches by P Dogra of Himachal Pradesh. No doubt, Mumbai Indians were so keen to get Iyer into their fold for IPL 2016.
C) Iyer also struck the most fours (153) and sixes (28) during this campaign. The difference between the top two highest number of fours scored is 50, highlighting Iyer’s stroke making ability and penchant to hit boundaries. Iyer’s 25 sixes was the also the most over boundaries struck any player during this season.
D) Iyer’s struck 11 scores of fifty or more during the 2015-16 edition, the most by a player in this edition. He along with Vijay Bharadwaj of Karnataka in 1998-99 and Abhishek Nayar of Mumbai in 2012-13 are the record joint holders of 11 scores of fifty or more in a single Ranji campaign.
Iyer’s performance this season proves he is a special player who likes to dominate the bowling and scores runs at a quick pace with a penchant to hit boundaries and sixes. And considering this is just Iyer’s second Ranji season, it makes his feat unique and praiseworthy. He will be keenly watched during the IPL while playing for Delhi Daredevils even as he looks to make an entry into the Indian national squad.
